Reception is the first school year for children aged 4 and up.

Mornings in Reception involve two whole class learning sessions dedicated to problem-solving, reasoning and numeracy and  communication, lanuage and literacy. Both daily whole class sessions are followed up with adult-guided group sessions which develop and extend the skills taught int he whole-class sessions. The children will have at least one adult-guided group activity per morning which builds to two by the summer term. Children who are not in adult-guided groups are allowed to free-flow across the building and to the outside where the continuous provision areas are set up wit activities matched to the weekly learning objectives. All Reception children also have a daily session of Read, Write Inc taught in five differentiated groups.

Afternoons in Reception are topic-led and are delivered in mixed ability and mixed class groups which rotate across the week. This means that every child has a group activity in Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Knowledge and Understanding of the World, Physical Development and Creative Development. It also means that every child has experience of being taught by all members of the early years team across each week.
