The teaching of phonics is about recognising the sounds of our language and is a principle method for teaching children to read and spell. Our pupils learn this in class, through daily teaching following the Letters and Sounds Framework, which is then reinforced through everything they read and write during the day (systematic synthetic phonics).  We have a wide range of resources which are adapted to meet the needs of the children. We believe teaching phonics does not just stop when children reach Year 3. Children are continually assessed in their phonics and children in Key Stage 2 receive regular discrete teaching of both phonics and spellings as relevant to their particular needs. Early reading follows the Oxford Reading Tree scheme.

With the aim to provide a positive and creative environment within which all children can learn and develop their writing, we incorporate a range of strategies to develop children’s understanding of writing structures, grammatical features, whilst also working hard to develop a rich and mature vocabulary.  This in turn provides them with the tools and building blocks needed to become confident and successful writers.
