Somers Park encourages access to musical opportunities at a wide range of levels to meet the needs of pupils such as choirs, ensembles, bands, percussion groups and specialist instrument tuition. There are two choirs in school that have open access for all pupils: a Key Stage 1 singing group and a community choir in Key Stage 2. There is also a school ensemble bringing together pupils in Key Stage 2 who are learning stringed instruments, trumpet and flute. There are broad-based rhythm and percussion groups that include steel pans providing open access for Key Stage 2 pupils, which prove popular with special needs pupils and boys. Pupils are taught to play the ocarina in Key Stage 1 and/or Year 3, moving onto the recorder in Year 4. All pupils in Year 5 learn an instrument, many of which are participating in the "Play2Learn" scheme for whole-class instrumental tuition.

The Malvern Area Music Centre is based at Somers Park and a wide selection of pupils from Malvern schools attend choirs, early years music groups and orchestras.

The school subsidises arts trips for those children who would otherwise not gain such opportunities to take part, such as visits to theatres, museums and art galleries.

The Choir

The choir is open to anyone in Key Stage 2. It also involves some adults who are involved with the school including staff and parents.

The choir's performances have included:

  • 2007: Captain Noah and his Floating Zoo (including part of a performance at Malvern Theatres)
  • 2008: Yanomamo (including an item performed at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford)
  • 2009: African Jigsaw (including a full performance at Malvern Priory Church)
  • 2010: A Land of Shadows (a setting of poems by John Masefield, including part of a performance at Malvern Theatres and a full performance at Malvern Priory Church)
  • 2011: All God's Creatures (performed with a full orchestra at Cheltenham Town Hall)
  • 2012: West of the Moon (a setting of poems by J.R.R. Tolkien)
  • 2013: Skeletons (a setting of poems by the Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy)


The school chose the arts as key areas of focus because of the potential to integrate such learning with thinking skills, speaking and listening and the self esteem of all children. The school has a core value of ‘physical creativity’ that focuses on all pupils given broad opportunities to learn creatively through physical experience. The arts aspect of this work is integrated through Chums with work such as sustainability, gardening, forest schools, and free flow learning experiences in the early years.

All of the above work resulted from participating in a university study on the impact of the arts on pupil learning across the curriculum. A central school belief is that the arts are vital in developing pupils successful learning and confidence.

Three successive Ofsted/HMI inspections have stated that this core value and related successful experiences make the school outstanding, ‘unique’, inspiring and highly creative. This has been further substantiated by three Artsmark Gold awards.
